Rachel Elaine Layton
January 20, 1946 ~ January 9, 2024 (age 77) 77 Years Old
Rachel “Elaine” Lee Layton, age 77, peacefully passed away on January 9, 2024. Elaine was born to Ellis Ray and Gracie Lee. She was raised in Lucedale (Agricola), MS and returned “home” after retiring from the teaching profession after 46 years. Elaine was married on October 16, 1971, to Larry M. Layton of Wewahitchka, FL. She had two children, Larry “Dewayne” Layton and Lori Ann Layton.
Elaine, Larry, and their two children lived in Wewahitchka, FL for the majority of their lives. Elaine was a Business Education teacher at Wewahitchka High School for over 40 years, teaching three generations of some families. Teaching was her passion, and she made life-long connections with the students and families she taught. She was an accomplished educator, winning many awards throughout her career with her most cherished being, Teacher of the Year which she won countless times.
Elaine had a one of a kind personality. She was fiercely independent, quick-witted, passionate, and determined. She used these attributes to finish high school a year early as well as accomplish her bachelors of education degree and Masters in Business Education degree by the age of 21. Although teaching was her passion, her greatest accomplishment and love was for her grandchildren that she adored.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Ellis Ray and Gracie Davis Lee, her brother Colen Ray Lee, her beloved husband Larry, and her cherished son Dewayne Layton.
Those left to cherish her memory include her beloved sisters Loraine Lee McDerment (Mitchell) and Mary Weeks Lee (Colen), her daughter Lori Ann Layton Ellis (Mike), and her five grandchildren Gabrielle “Gabby” Ellis, Alexis “Lexi” Ellis, Porter Layton, Zachary “Zach” Ellis, and Marlowe Layton. She also leaves behind nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and cousins.
