Our community has lost a very special person this week. Margaret Elizabeth “Liz” Davis Simpson (73) passed peacefully on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, surrounded by her loving family.
Welcomed August 5th, 1949, to Julia Sybil and Henry Gordon Davis, Liz was born and raised in George County, Mississippi, which worked out wonderfully with her love for gardening and the outdoors.
Now, it needs to be said that before Liz’s passing, she specifically told us not to “lie” and tell everyone what a “great person” she was. So, we won’t. We’ll tell you exactly what she was like.
Liz was the best mother anyone could ask for to children, Melia Angelina Simpson Archey, Kimberly Anne Simpson Henderson and Shawn Oneil Simpson. She and her late husband, Neil raised their three successful and loving children in Lucedale, MS. They joyfully shared their life experiences from traveling to guitar lessons to countless family Sunday dinners in the same home they were raised.
She did this not out of obligation, but because of who she was. Supporting her children through every obstacle and challenge thrown at them came naturally. She was mad if they were mad, happy if they were happy, even hungry and willing to cook at the right times- funny how that works out- but always loving and supportive throughout their lives.
Liz was also the very best Grandmama (it’s true, we checked) to seven grandchildren, Zack (Hope) Archey, Chelsea (Steve) Archey Tyner, D.J. Henderson Jr., Hannah (Tyler) Henderson Thornton, Samuel Henderson, Parker Simpson, Davis Simpson, J.T. Simpson. Her “Grandmama accomplishments” are honestly too long to list but please know this also came very naturally to her. She put her parenting to shame when compared.
And lastly, Liz was strong. She fought every challenge with such grace and determination. Nothing, and I mean nothing, was too difficult for this woman. She beat cancer twice, helped her daughter cope with the loss of a child, watched her husband of 46 years pass before her very eyes and survived all of it. A true pillar.
She will be remembered for so much more than JUST being a “good person.” She will be remembered for the love she shared with her family, her great sense of humor, her fierce loyalty and maybe even her stubbornness at times. She will be missed dearly.
Preceding (and waiting anxiously to hug Liz): Parents, Sybil and Gordy Davis, husband, William Oneil Simpson, one grandson, David Albert “DJ” Henderson Jr., three sisters, one brother and one niece.
She is survived (and missed terribly) by: Three children, Melia Angelina (Stevie) Simpson Archey, Kimberly Anne (David) Simpson Henderson and Shawn Oneil (Amy) Simpson, seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren, six sisters, three brothers and 34 nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at Moments Funeral Home Saturday, July 22nd, 2023. Visitation will be 10am-12pm for community then followed by services lead by Rev. David Henderson.
Graveside services will follow at New Antioch Cemetery where pallbearers will be: Zack Archey, Sam Henderson, Parker Simpson, Davis Simpson, J.T. Simpson, Steve Tyner and Tyler Thornton.
We invite all who wish to come say goodbye to such a wonderful soul.
