Lula Lee Francis Cassady Green, age 85, died February 3, 2025 at 3:04 PM.
She is a descendant of Cassadys, Mills, Gibsons, Masons, Dueitts and Merritts. Some of her ancestors arrived in the Mississippi Territory before Mississippi and Alabama were states.
Her 5 times Great Grandfather William Mills fought in The Revolutionary War and The War of 1812 in New Orleans, LA. He arrived in the Mississippi Territory on the Pascagoula River Basin in 1809 to claim his nine hundred and forty acres, that the government gave him, and helped named Jackson County. He was born in Marion District, South Carolina. He moved to Greene County, Rocky Creek about 1825. He died at 111 years of age. Her 3 times Great Grandfather Andrew Mills died in the civil War along with two of his brothers. His father, William Mills, Jr. and two brothers returned home from the Civil War. Her 2 times Great Grandfather was Elias Mills. Her Grandfather was Thomas Washington Mills.
The Cassadys came from North Carolina and settled in south AL after the Revolutionary War. The Cassadys came to Greene County in 1925.
The Gibsons settled in Greene County in the early 1800’s.
She graduated from Leakesville High School in 1958. She graduated from Jones Junior College, the University of Southern Mississippi with a BS degree in English, William Carey with a master’s degree in English and continued college until she got her 6th year with AAA certification. Lula was a school teacher for 25 years in George Co. and one year in FL. She traveled to Ireland in search of information on her ancestors, which she found that the Cassadys were there during the 1600’s, according to grave sites. She also traveled to England, France and Italy. She wrote several short stories, poems, and a couple of novels and painted with oil on canvases. She was a history buff and studied the histories of Ireland, England, and Russia. She was a member of Tarra Heights Baptist Church and currently Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church, which she attended.
She was preceded in death by her son, Lee Green; granddaughter, Magan Green; father, Daniel Cassady; mother, Ada Mills Cassady Kittrell; sister, Bernice Stearman; grandfather, Thomas Washington Mills; grandmother, Lula Gibson Mills; grandfather, David Crockett Cassady; grandmother, Frannie Merritt Cassady.
Left to cherish her memory include her son, Terril (Donna) Green; daughter, Robbie Hodge (Grant) Cooper; grandchildren, Ashley Bennett (Coyt) Tanner, Charlie (Randi) Bennett, Tony (Iesha) Bennett, Tara Green (Dwight) Tillman, Tonie Green (Matt) Roberts, R.T. (Hope) Green, Tyler (Jennifer) Green, Chase (Katie) Green, and Amy (Brian) Young; great grandchildren, Hadley and Colson Roberts, Trace, Daniel Dawson and Rosalie Tillman, Madalyn, Ada and Remi Green, Jace Green, Roran Green, Cody, Brooklynn, Jade, and Courtney Tanner, Alyana Bennett, Bea Bennett, Kylar Bennett, Mary Charlotte Bennett, Amory and Emma Young; great-great grandchild, Oaklynn Tanner; sisters, Berlene Bradley, Dannie Eubanks, and Iris Blakney; brother, Nicholas (Janice) Cassady; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, February 15, 2025, at Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church beginning at 11:00 AM with Bro. Mark Warden officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.
