John Gordon Sims, Jr. age 83, passed away peacefully February 11, 2025 with his family by his side. He was a 1959 graduate of Laurel Gardner High School. He continued his education at Jones Junior College and excelled on the baseball team as a left-handed pitcher. He also attended The University of Southern Mississippi where he received a Business Administration degree in 1963. He was drafted in the United States Army and proudly served for many years. He is most known for his work as a professional photographer for the last 57 years. He began working for Wallace-Reeves Studios in Lucedale in 1966 and would eventually take ownership and start the legacy of John Sims Studio. He served in various positions with the Professional Photographers of Mississippi and Alabama Association, including President. He has won multiple awards in a variety of print picture competitions. He has contributed tremendously to his trade over the decades, including mentoring aspiring photographers, professionals and amateurs. His impact in the industry will carry on for generations.
He is preceded in death by his sons, Tony Purvis, and Duane Purvis; parents, John Gordon Sims, Sr. and Evie Moorehead Sims; sister, Billie Jean Sims Reeves; former wife, Barbara Beasley Sims.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 37 years, Cheryl Sumrall Sims; children, John Gordon “Trae” (Kim) Sims, III, and Michelle (Jimmy) Gray; grandchildren, Karenna (Christian Tinnion) Sims, John Gordon “Jack” Sims, IV, Danielle Gray, Emily Gray, and Alex Gray; dedicated assistant of 18 years and friend, Kim Brannan; faithful companion, Zoey; numerous other relatives, friends, and an entire community who loved and respected him dearly.
The Celebration of Life Service will be Friday, February 21, 2025 beginning at 12:00 PM at the First Baptist Church of Lucedale with Bro. Eddie Davidson officiating. The family will begin receiving friends at 11:00 AM.
