James Newton Garlington Obituary
James Newton Garlington passed away in Lucedale, Mississippi on April 21, 2026. James was born on January 4, 1963 in Pasadena, Texas. He was the son of Hilda and Newton Garlington. He graduated from Sam Rayburn High School in Pasadena, Texas. James ate, slept, and breathed music. He had a driven passion which later transformed into being in a band and then establishing a career as a recording engineer who recorded various music artists under the name of “Jimmi Jaymes.” He played many instruments, but the most memorable occasions were often accompanied by his guitar. There was also the time he taught his granddaughter to play the harmonica. James was also a talented welder.
Despite all of his hard work and success, he would say that his greatest accomplishments in life were his three children and his three grandchildren. He also loved his son-in-law, Tim, as if he was his own. He knew when his time came, that his daughter and grandchildren would be well taken care of. He had the biggest heart for helping others, could quote the Bible better than most, loved his family with everything he had, appreciated a good steak and baked potato, and always enjoyed a few “cool snacks.” He spent many summers floating the river, boating, and in his younger years, trail riding. He also enjoyed fishing with his grandchildren.
His jokes, although sometimes questionable for small ears, and his contagious laugh will forever be something to be rivaled. It was impossible not to laugh or smile in his presence. He loved big. In fact, he loved so big that he once befriended a garden spider that he named “Aretha Fanglin.” He would go as far as to catch her bugs and toss them into her web. He loved all animals, but his three dogs held the most special place in his heart. All of this to say that the loss of him will forever leave a permanent scar earth-side.
While we miss him very much, we know he is rejoicing in heaven with his daughter, Brittany, and countless loved ones. James was the most loving father, grandfather, uncle, and friend.
James is preceded in death by his father, Newton Garlington, and daughter, Brittany Garlington.
James is survived by his mother, Hilda Garlington; daughter, Paige Hicks; stepson, Johnny Baker; grandchildren, Matthew Hicks, Christopher Hicks, and Haley Hicks; siblings, John Garlington, Larry Havens, Van Coles, Darlene Hoff, Doreen Forner, Marie “Anna” Templeton, and Judy Brown.
