Buster Delano Cumbest, age 88, of Hurley, Mississippi, passed away on June 26, 2026.
Born on November 10, 1937, in Wade, Mississippi, he was a graduate of Wade Consolidated High School, Class of 1957. During his high school years, he worked at Cumbest Manufacturing and proudly served in the National Guard, where he received an honorable discharge.
Buster's work ethic and proudest achievements live on through the memories he passed down. In his final days, he looked back on his journey, sharing these words with his family: "My dream was to work alongside my father on a dredge boat. The day after graduation, I traveled to Slidell, Louisiana, where I began working for F.J.J. Sloat Dredging Company, earning one dollar an hour. Every Friday, I looked forward to visiting White's Kitchen, where I spent my first dollar on an all-you-can-eat fried chicken meal. I later worked at Parker Studio in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, before beginning a 33-year career at Ingalls Shipbuilding. Following my retirement from Ingalls, I continued working in the Quality Assurance Department for Omni Engineering and Griffin Technology, who were contractors for the United States Navy."
Buster loved the outdoors and remained active until his illness. He enjoyed playing and coaching sports, bowling, farming, gardening, fishing, hunting, and traveling. He devoted many years to coaching with East Central Dixie Youth Baseball and East Central Girls Softball. He also served as a mentor to local teenagers through the Jackson County Youth Court. Additionally, Buster was a proud member of East Central Masonic Lodge #631 in Wade, Mississippi, for more than 50 years.
He was the son of the late Barney and Rosalie (Zeigler) Cumbest. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Terri Cumbest (Mitchell) Pierce; his granddaughter, Channing Paige Pierce; his great-grandson, Brantley Cumbest Hinton; his son-in-law, Randy Adams; and his siblings, Delphia Bishop, Carbury "Buck" Cumbest, Varney "Flat" Cumbest, Gerald "Skipper" Cumbest, Mary Lou Yates, and Marlene "Tenny" Pierce.
He leaves behind his wife of 66 years, Lorna Jean Holder Cumbest; his daughter, Tammi Adams; and his beloved grandchildren. Known affectionately as "Bubby" and "Bubba," he was deeply loved by his grandsons, Dale (Stephenie) Hinton, Skyler (Loni) Adams, and Dylon Pierce, and his granddaughter, Santana (Matthew) Magee. He is also survived by his great-grandsons, Blair Hinton and Ryker Adams; his great-granddaughters, Gracie Adams, Paige Hinton, Brooklynn Magee, Olivia Magee, and Lindy Magee; along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
A graveside service will be held at Coleman Cemetery in Hurley, Mississippi, on Wednesday, July 1, 2026 beginning at 10:00 AM with Bro. Gene Emswiler officiating.
Pallbearers will be Ricky Brockway, Dale Hinton, Skyler Adams, Matthew Magee, Dylon Pierce, and Blair Hinton.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Gentiva Hospice, family members, friends, and caregivers for the kindness, compassion, support, and care shown to Buster during his illness.
In lieu of flowers, Buster requested that memorial donations be made to East Central Masonic Lodge #631, Highway 614, Moss Point, Mississippi 39562.
